In-text citations in apa research paper outline:

As Cundiff frames it, “the decision to allow a terminally ill person to die usually comes after multiple treatments have failed to cure or control a patient’s disease and the prognosis is poor. Patients themselves, and family members, begin to appreciate that further heroic treatment would only prolong suffering and dying and not give a realistic chance at remission or recovery (Cundiff, 1992).

A statement issued in Michigan, 1998, by a multi religious forum, “those who promote the last, fatal escape as a “right” should remember that such a “right” may quickly become an expectation and finally even a “duty” to die. We fear eventually that some individuals and families will be forced to put financial concerns above the needs of loved ones” (cited in Straiton, Reason Opposes Euthanasia, 2006)

Arnett (1999) tell us, “The paradox of adolescence is that it can be at once a time of storm and stress and a time of exuberant growth” (Arnett, American psychologist, 1999).

In an apa essay, for directly quoted works which do not give the name of the author, should be represented by the name of the publication and the year of publication. If there are more than 6 authors then the last name of the first author should be given followed by the word et al.

Learn How to Cite a Paper

How to Cite a Paper – Guidelines

Knowing how to cite a paper is one of the most important aspects of essay writing. It is essential that a writer is aware of all the essay formats types that are used for writing. The most commonly used formatting patterns are the MLA, APA, Chicago and Harvard. While giving direct quotations it is imperative for the writer to cite correctly so as to avoid being charged for plagiarism.

Given below are examples of how to cite a paper correctly using various essay formats:

In case of MLA formatting, in-text citation will give the author’s name and page number. Without the available name of the author the title of the work cited can be used instead of the author’s name along with page number.

As for example:

According to Higginson “these qualities rendered him a proper object for the effective patriots…to bring forward to favour their views…..availed themselves of his great desire for popularity….represented him as a man useful in the cause of liberty…he was captivated…of being a publick man…was lavish of money…to gain their affections” (Higginson, p. 6-7)

The ‘works cited’ page for this would be:

Higginson, Stephen.Ten Chapters in the life of John Hancock. New York. Original from
University of California, 1857. Digitized on 11th October 2007. Print.

In case of net reference – site name. article heading or name. Date of publishing. Name of the affiliated university or organization. web. Date of when you visited the site.

In case of journal reference – Author. Name of the article. Name of the journal. Date of publishing. Pages referred. Print.

For APA formatting the in-text citation for a book would be:

According to Higginson (1857) “these qualities rendered him a proper object for the effective patriots…to bring forward to favour their views…..availed themselves of his great desire for popularity….represented him as a man useful in the cause of liberty…he was captivated…of being a publick man…was lavish of money…to gain their affections” (Higginson, 1857).

The ‘reference’ page would be:

Higginson, Stephen. (1857). Ten Chapters in the life of John Hancock. New York. Original from
University of California. Digitized on 11th October 2007. 6-7.

In case of journals – last name of author, initials of the first name of the author (year).
name of the article. Name of the journal. Volume number. Pages.

In case of net reference – last name of author, initials of the first name of the author (year).
Name of the article. Name of the Online journal. Retrieved on date from
Full link of the site.

The in-text citation for a Chicago paper would be will be like this:

According to Higginson “these qualities rendered him a proper object for the effective patriots…to bring forward to favour their views…..availed themselves of his great desire for popularity….represented him as a man useful in the cause of liberty…he was captivated…of being a publick man…was lavish of money…to gain their affections”. 1

The footnote for this would be

1. S. Higginson.Ten Chapters in the life of John Hancock. (New York. Original from
University of California, 1857), 6-7.

The ‘Notes page’, at the end of the essay but before the bibliography page, should read like this:

Stephen Higginson. Ten Chapters in the life of John Hancock. (New York. Original from
University of California, 1857), 6-7.

The last page that is the ‘Bibliography page’ that arranges the names of the cited authors alphabetically, should read like this:

Higginson, S. Ten Chapters in the life of John Hancock. New York. Original from
University of California, 1857. Digitized on 11th October 2007.

How to cite a paper may appear to be complicated at the first glance. However with lots of practice this would also become an easier job to do. MLA Essay Citation Example

MLA Essay Formatting Pattern

MLA essay format also known as the Modern Language Association of America is used mainly for writing papers on arts and humanities. This style of writing is followed mainly in the United States and Canada. There are certain basic formatting patterns that is followed for any essay writing. The necessary norms are that the essay must be computer generated on a standard white 8.5 by 11 inch paper. The written text will have a margin of 1 inch on all sides. There will be a header which will generally carry the last name of the writer or the title of the essay along with page numbers at the upper right hand corner of the page. The text has to be double spaced with the font being Times New Roman and the font size 12 points. The first line of a paragraph will be indented one half inch ( five spaces or press the tab button once) from the left margin. Space to be pressed only once after each punctuation mark. If indeed, a teacher asks for end notes it would be on a separate page, after the essay and before the ‘works cited’ page.

The basic difference that a MLA format essay will have from an APA or Chicago or Harvard formatting are in the writing patterns of the in-text citations given within the essay and the works cited page list. given below are examples of MLA in-text citations and references.

For in-text citation it would be :

Passive euthanasia as described by Kappel “is, roughly, to countenance the death of someone by withholding or withdrawing life-sustaining treatment, or by administering pain-killing drugs in doses that accelerate death” (Kappel, p.2).

As Dowbiggin tells us, “suicide was beyond criticism, Hume contended, because, in the natural scheme of things, all voluntary deaths were the result of the laws that governed the universe. Suicide provided…(Dowbiggin, p.31)

An in-text citation for a direct quotation of an author, taken from another author’s book or written article (here the article is one page long so no numbers are given, instead the title of the article has been given):

Defined by Wolhandler has special legal meaning, “Courts have defined legal competence as the ‘mental ability to make a rational decision, which includes the ability to perceive, appreciate all the relevant facts, and to reach a rational judgment upon such facts.’ In the euthanasia context…..” ( Cited in Le Baron, Definitions).

The works cited page for the above in-text citations would be:

For net citation

Kappel, K. The Morality of Euthanasia. University of Copenhagen. 2001. Web.

19th January 2010. Available from

http://www.staff.hum.ku.dk/kappel/tekster/pdf/The%20morality%20of%20euthanasia.pdf

For book citation

Plymouth: Rowman and Littlefield. 2007. Print.

Tips to Write a Chicago Style Paper

17  February, 2010

Example of a Chicago Style Paper

A chicago style paper is the essay format chiefly used for writing social science, history and political science papers. In history and social science papers the reference or source is extremely important. For example, when reading about the role of Mary Magdalene in th history of Christianity, the writer would want to know whether a quotation in the article that he or she is reading comes from a review of that time or from a gospel. Since other citation formats like APA or MLA give the name of the author and a short title only, in case of historical studies like the one given above it is much more important to know the source of the information along with the name of the author, so a Chicago-style referencing is much preferred. The most important part of a Chicago paper is the writing of footnotes and endnotes and a bibliography page.

An example of a chicago style paper :

The in-text citation will be like this:

As Ramsay and Wilson tells us, “to Hebrews he emphasizes his Jewish character, and his birth in Tarsus is added as an accident: but to Claudius Lysias, a Greek Roman, he emphasizes Tarsian citizenship (after having told of his Roman citizenship)”1 .

The footnote to this in-text citation at the page end would read like this

1 W. Ramsay and M. Wilson, St. Paul : The Traveler and Roman citizen, (London: Kregel Publications, 2001), 36

Footnotes are written at the bottom of a page in 10-point font which is smaller than the main text (12 points).

The ‘Notes page’, at the end of the essay but before the bibliography page, should read like this:

1. Sir William Mitchell Ramsay and Mark Wilson. St. Paul: The Traveler and Roman citizen. (London: Kregel Publications, 2001), 36.

Endnotes are written at the end of a chapter or at the end of the essay in same size font as the main text. They will include the superscript number given with the in-text citation.Full citation is to be given for first-time referencing and later when the source is repeated the term IBID is to be used. The first line of all footnotes and content notes are to be indented, single spaced with an extra space between the references.

The last page that is the ‘Bibliography page’ that arranges the names of the cited authors alphabetically, should read like this:

Ramsay, W and Wilson, M. St. Paul: The Traveler and Roman citizen. London: Kregel Publications.
2001.

So we can see how detailed the referencing pattern in a Chicago style paper should be. There is a new format of the Chicago style followed in science subjects. The pattern is known as the “author date” style. Here the in-text citation contains the name of the author and the date of publishing and at the end the bibliography gives the details as in the older format. Check out sample essays written in Chicago format to get a more clear idea of how to cite your paper correctly. However this type of formatting is a little complicated and can be perfected only after long practice. apa essay- Basic Guidelines

An apa essay means writing in the format developed and prescribed by the American Psychological Association. There are other formats like the MLA, Chicago and the Harvard, which are also used for writing various academic essays. The apa essay format differs from others in the way it is used to reference direct quotes and citations that are used in the essay. While writing a good paper it will be imperative that the writer uses the works of other authors and writers as evidences to support his arguments. While giving such direct quotations the writer will have to cite them to give due credit to the author from whom the work has been taken.

citations and reference pattern in APA essay

In-text citation

The last name and the date of publication should be in parentheses. Sometimes if the teacher instructs, then the name of the publication should be given along with the author’s name and date.

As for eg. for an in-text citation of a journal publication: Arnett (1999) tell us, “The paradox of adolescence is that it can be at once a time of storm and stress and a time of exuberant growth” (Arnett, American psychologist, 1999).

Reference page for this in text citation would look like

Arnett, J, J. (1999). Adolescent Storm and Stress, Reconsidered, American Psychologist, 54,
Vol. 54, No. 5, 317-326.

For a book, in-text citation would be

As Corby (1997) tell us “The commonly held (adultist) views about adolescents are that they pose a threat to society rather than the other way round … it is important at least to redress this imbalance … for this approach is both ethical (self-evident) and practical, to avoid alienation of future generations” ( Corby, 1997).

The reference page for this would look like

Corby, B. (1997). ‘Mistreatment of young people’ in Roache, J and Tucker, S (eds.),
Youth in Society. London: Sage. 215.

For internet references, in-text citation would be

As Chen and Faruggia (2002) puts it “Recent research (e.g., Arnett, 1999; Freeman, 1983) has corrected both Hall’s “demonized” adolescents and Mead’s “romanticized” life of … adolescents. Most adolescents live a life with few serious personal or social problems, but for a minority of adolescents, adolescence still represents the most troubling years” (Chen and Faruggia, 2002)

The reference page would look like

Chen, C and Farruggia, S. (August 2002). Culture and adolescent development. Unit 11,
chapter 2 / V1. Department of Psychology and Social Behavior. University of California,
Irvine. U.S.A. Retrieved on 27th January 2010 from

http://bsdweb.bsdvt.org/~hfriday/pdfs/Psych/Unit%20IV/cultureandad.pdf

In an apa essay, works which do not give the name of the author should be represented by the name of the publication and the year of publication. If there are more than 6 authors then the last name of the first author should be given followed by the word et al.

An apa essay format is not as difficult as it appears. Once one starts practicing writing academic essays regularly in the apa format it will be easier for him to understand the pattern followed for these essay types. Tips for Writing the ACT essay

ACT essay – Basic Guidelines

For admission in undergraduate programs in all American colleges and universities, it is mandatory for the students to sit for the ACT or SAT exams. As a part of the test, it will be essential for the students to complete an essay within 30 minutes. So an ACT essay means writing under great pressure. Doing anything under pressure was never very easy. Similarly, completing a well written essay within 30 minutes is no mean job. However, if you wish to continue with your higher studies you will have to be prepared to write this exam essay.

In the SAT or ACT essay you will have to follow three basic guidelines. These are :

1. You will have to follow the parameters set for standard written English

2. You will have to develop your own viewpoint on the given issue.

3. The given viewpoint will have to be supported by logical reasoning and other evidences from your own experiences and observations, or from your various readings. Whatever evidence you provide make sure it is relevant to the issue.

Given below are some tips to write an ACT essay

1. First relax and then set your pace. Before trying to compose the essay first compose yourself, so that you can think and write with a clear mind. You have thirty minutes to read and think over the issue given in the essay prompt and also to plan and write the essay. So first read the prompt well and then plan the essay. Most probably you will not get time to first write a draft, then revise and finally write the paper. So it is always better to take some time to plan first. Then, when you have a plan chalked out, start writing the paper.

2. When you get the question, first read and understand the prompt given. Plan how you want to answer the question presented in the prompt. Since you will not get time to prepare a draft, it would be a good idea to jot down the important points, ideas, reasons and examples, as in a list. Later, when you write the essay, you can take up these points and expand on them.

3. Once you have planned and jotted down the important points you can start writing the essay. Right at the very beginning make your viewpoint on the issue very clear. Make sure that you state your views in a clear, logical manner so that the reader has no problems understanding them. Discuss the issue on a broad perspective and make an evaluation of all its implications and problems. Present viewpoints that oppose your stand and refute them by presenting strong counterarguments. Present a strong conclusion to your essay and reinforce your stand. Make sure the essay reflects your clarity of thoughts and also logically develops your ideas. Most important point is to stay on track and not lose relevancy of the issue.

4. Before submitting your paper take some time out and do a quick revision. Correct any mistake that you notice and try to make the paper as perfect as possible, within the time limit of half an hour.

Writing the ACT essay needs a lot of practice. In the months before the examination, practice writing everyday. Write an essay within the stipulated time and check for accuracy while writing. See that you can complete your writing within the set time. Read various samples essays and while using them as guides, practice writing more. The only way to score well in the ACT exam is to practice, practice and more practice.

Essay writing – Example of a Good Essay Writing

16  January, 2010

Sample of a Good Essay writing

Essay writing is a common assignment for all school and college going students. it is given to evaluate the students as to how much they have understood and how well they can express themselves. An essay paper will be written in a set pattern and will have an introduction, a body and a conclusion. The introduction will present the thesis statement or the main argument and give a brief introduction of the chosen topic. The body will give the the details of the topic and examine the main arguments from all angles while giving evidences for all presented arguments. The conclusion will wind up the whole essay by reinstating the thesis statement and just brush up the main important points. It will have a strong concluding statement to convince the reader and have a lasting effect.

Given below is an example of essay writing:

Topic: Dealing with Iran and its uranium enrichment programme

Introduction

Iran has declared to go ahead with its nuclear power project. For this purpose, it is continuing its work on uranium enrichment and heavy water nuclear reactor programs in its various nuclear reactor sites. This declaration has caused much consternation amongst the world communities and UN Security Council has already passed a resolution and imposed sanctions on Iran. Iran’s experiments with nuclear power programme started long back in the 1950’s with the help of American supplied nuclear reactors. They wanted to construct around 20 nuclear reactors that would produce nuclear power of about 20000 mega watts. Iran also made it very clear to the world that it was not making any nuclear weapons. After the revolution of 1979, Iran stopped its nuclear power programme which was again revived in 1982. This time it was seen as threat by most countries of the world. This article tries to explore the stand taken by Iran and its reasons for continuing with its nuclear programme, it will also take a look at the reactions of the world community at this blatant defiance……………..

Body

Position of the Iranian government and their stated reasons for continuing with this programme: Iran started constructing “two 1300 megawatt power reactors Bushehr, built by two German firms Siemens and Kraftwerk Union in the mid-1970s for the Shah of Iran” (Feldman, 1997: 47) and under President Ahmadinejad in 2006 has declared to continue building up on nuclear power programs. Their reason for doing so, as per Iranian officials, is to generate electricity, so that it can export its surplus natural supplies of fossil fuel. Another reason as stated by Iran is to produce medical isotopes which would be beneficial to those in the medical research line………….

How and why the international communities attempt to control the spread of nuclear weapons and nuclear technology: After the end of the Cold War, the entire world community decided to come together and form certain treaties that would be binding on all the countries and would bring about an end to all WMD (weapons of mass destruction). The Non Proliferation treaty or NPT “is the cornerstone of the nuclear nonproliferation regime. In signing the NPT, non-nuclear weapons states pledged not to acquire nuclear weapons in exchange for a pledge by the nuclear………………….

Conlcusion

The countries of the world must look to strengthening existing IAEA inspection programs This is very important as only with stringent rules and timely inspections can one monitor as to what is exactly going on inside the controversial reactor sites. Loopholes in the treaties must be done away with so that no country, not even the superpowers, can make use of them and escape the penalties………….

Opinion Essay – Present Your Opinion Logically Without Having to Convince Anyone

12  January, 2010

Guidelines on How to Write an Opinion Essay

Opinion essay is one of the easiest type of essays that are given as assignments. This essay type necessitates the writer to choose a topic and present his opinion on that topic. The object or topic could be anything the writer feels strongly about and has good knowledge on. It could be any hobby, like some form of sports, or maybe gardening, or collecting coins or stamps ,anything the writer is keen on . After fixing a topic then the writer will have to list down his viewpoints or opinions on the subject and also look for and find reasons that support his viewpoints. Also arguments to counter the opposing viewpoints are to be prepared. Once the groundwork is done the writer can then set about to write the essay.

An opinion essay will have to be written in a formal style and preferably addressed directly to the reader. It is best to start the essay with an anecdote or a quote, a scenario or may be even a thought inspiring rhetorical question after which the topic is to be introduced and clearly stated. The main body should have well developed and well connected paragraphs with proper linking words joining the sentences and paragraphs. In the main body reference can be made to some interesting or unusual happening or event. No short form or emotive phrases are to be used while writing this essay and personal examples are best avoided, while facts and data without proper referencing and citations are an absolute no-no. The writer has to keep in mind that there are certain phrases to be used while writing an opinion essay and these are ‘my opinion is that….’, ‘I firmly believe that…..’, ‘I am convinced that…’ and ‘according to my point of view’ and other simliar phrases in the same vein.

An opinion essay asks for the writer’s opinion only. It is not an argumentative essay where the writer will present arguments and counter arguments and try to convince his reader. Like a persuasive essay it will not single handedly persuade the reader and coax him to believe in his views. This essay will present the writer’s opinion on certain issues and will be backed by reliable and logical evidences. It will completely depend on the reader whether he wants to accept the opinion presented by the writer or not. Like any other essay this too will follow a five paragraph format and will have an introduction, a body and a conclusion.

An opinion essay is a chance where the writer can pick a topic or issue of his choice and express his opinion on it. He can write anything he feels strongly about the chosen issue without having to really work hard on convincing someone. So take your pen and start writing, and let the world know about your views and opinions without caring much whether the world agrees with your or not, just be sure to back your opinions with strong, logical evidences. However if you feel that this getting to be too much for you then place an order at MasterPapers.com and ask any of the expert writers to write this essay for you.

MLA Research Paper Writing

January, 2010

Guidelines to a MLA Research Paper

Research paper writing involves a lot of exploration on the chosen theme and also correct formatting as per the format type prescribed by the instructor. There are four main types of format pattern followed for academic purposes. These are the MLA format, APA format, Chicago format and the Harvard format. The MLA research paper format also known as the Modern Language Association of America is used mainly for writing papers on arts and humanities. This style of writing is followed mainly in the United States and Canada.

A MLA research paper in most cases does not have any title page but it is always advisable that one should follow the directions of the instructor in this case. There are certain rules that are common for almost all research paper types. The paper must be computer generated (unless otherwise specified) on a standard white 8.5 by 11 inch paper. The written text will have a margin of 1 inch on all sides. There will be a header which will carry the last name of the writer along with page numbers, at the upper right hand corner of the page. The text has to be double spaced with the font being Times New Roman and the font size 12 points. The first line of a paragraph will be indented one half inch ( five spaces) from the left margin. Space to be pressed only once after each punctuation mark.

In case of in text citation, MLA formatting will give the author’s name and page number. Without the available name of the author the title of the work cited can be used instead of the author’s name along with page number.

The reference of a MLA Research Paper would be formatted in this manner:

in case of book reference – Surname of the author followed by the first name.
Name of the book. Place of publication. Name of the publishing company. Date of publishing. Print.

In case of net reference – site name. article heading or name. Date of publishing. Name of the affiliated university or organization. web. Date of when you visited the site.

In case of journal reference – Author. Name of the article. Name of the journal. Date of publishing. Pages referred. Print.

In case of reference from a thesis paper – This would be similar to that of a book reference. The word “Diss” or “MA” must be given alongside to show that it is a thesis paper and the university name is also to be included.

MLA research paper is the easiest to format and write. Once one understands the formatting well it will be a cakewalk. However writing a research paper is no easy job and putting it in the MLA format is the least of all the problems. Before writing a research paper one should prepare an outline and also check various research paper examples to know the perfect art of writing a thesis paper. However if you still feel unsure of writing your assigned research paper all by yourself come to us at MasterPapers.com and let any of the expert writers prepare the essay for you.

Take Expert Help While Writing Your Descriptive Essay

January, 2010

Descriptive Essay – Guidelines to Write One

Descriptive essays aim to present a vivid description of an incident chosen. The writer tries to make it point to create a situation where the reader while reading the essay feels so involved that it is almost like he is experiencing the same thing too. Such an effect has to be created by the writer only through his writing, and nothing else. So a writer will have to be careful while selecting a topic. A topic that a writer may wish to illuminate upon may vary from a description of a person to a description of a place to the description of a memory or object. So we can see that whatever a writer may perceive as an experience from his personal life and feels that it is worth sharing with his reader, can be fitted under the topic of a descriptive essay.

When starting to write a descriptive essay one will have to find out the reason behind the choice of his topic. He should be able to find out what is so special about the topic that he wants to describe it to his readers. Once the writer can find the reason he can then correctly describe and emote in the essay. As for example you as a writer may wish to describe your mother. Instead of just describing her physical attributes you may wish to describe her inner goodness and mental strength. So while writing the essay describe in great details the hardships she faced in her life and how she dealt with them. Show the reader vividly her daily labors and hardships that she undertook with a smiling face just to ensure that her children get a better future. Then show the reader how all this fight for survival revealed her inner strength yet did not make her an embittered woman. Describe in such a way that the reader understands the joy with which she faced her difficult life and the happiness she derived from serving someone poorer and needier than her. Paint such a vivid picture with your words that your mother comes alive and the reader can almost feel her. This is the trick in writing a descriptive essay. You will have to describe something in such a way that it comes alive to the reader.

While writing a descriptive essay be careful to check that the essay does not become too long and boring. Make good use of all the five senses to describe, that is, give more descriptions of the sights, sounds, taste or textures of the surrounding things to make the essay come alive. Cut out on all the unnecessary details to make the essay comprehensive and interesting. Follow the prescribed essay format religiously and cite and refer correctly. After writing, proofread and edit the essay to submit a perfect essay.

Descriptive essays are very common assignments set by the professors in each term. At MasterPapers.com we have a panel of expert writers who can choose an excellent essay topic and describe it in an excellent language.
