Basic Guidelines for a Science Essay

March, 2010

Example of a Science Essay

A science essay is writing about the various improvisations made by man and nature. It is the study of how man and nature work for their own benefit. A science paper on biology would explore the natural habitat around us. It would research the flora and the fauna of the past and the present and prepare a paper that would give us an insight into this fascinating world of all living things. A technology paper would take up issues pertaining to the technological and engineering marvels invented by human intelligence and used for the benefit of all. Given below is an example of a science essay that discusses the process called fusion, a very important scientific process.

Introduction

Nuclear fusion – the process:
When the nucleus of an atom undergoes changes due to certain physical reactions the process is known as a nuclear reaction and during this reaction a certain amount of energy is released which is the nuclear energy. This nuclear energy is produced by nuclear reactions of two types:
1. Nuclear fission.
2. Nuclear fusion.
Nuclear fusion. The word itself shows what the term refers to. “Fusion” means to join or combine together. So in a nuclear fusion it is the joining or combining of two nuclei to form a new nucleus. Here the two nuclei of a lighter element combine to form the nucleus of a heavier element. As Singh and Kaur define it “the process in which two nuclei of light elements (like that of hydrogen) combine to form a heavy nucleus (like that of helium) is called nuclear fusion ( Singh and Kaur,“Science for Tenth Class (part 1)”, 242). The nuclei ….

Body

Hydrogen and its isotopes (protium, deuterium or tritium) which have the smallest nuclear charge react at the required minimum heat or temperature and helium and its isotopes (3He and 4He) with an extremely low nuclear mass are the preferred fusion atoms. Two nuclei of the Hydrogen atoms of mass number 2 (Deuterium atoms) under high temperature and pressure combine to form the bigger and heavier nucleus of helium along with the release of a neutron. The equation would look like this:
2H1 + 2H1 ———————-> 3He2 + 1neutron0 + large amount of energy.
(Two deuterium (heavy helium atom)
light atoms)
In a nuclear fusion the process involves liberation of a large amount of energy which is termed as “Fusion power”. However…..

Conclusion

Research work has been going on for the last 50 years with the aim of producing a nuclear fusion reaction that would be under control and the heat produced due to the liberated energy can be tapped for the production of electric power. Self-sustaining and controlled fusion reactions have been shown to some extent in the tokamak reactors which theoretically can produce ten times more heat energy than is required for the nuclei to fuse together for the fusion to start. Tokamak is a sort of thermonuclear fusion inducing reactor. It was first developed by the then USSR and are now seen in other countries too. However, the correct procedure to make the nuclear fusion self-sustaining is still eluding the scientists and the building …..

History Essay Writing Tips

History Essays – Guidelines

Writing history essays is nothing different from writing any other essays. It is only that the subject differs. A history paper, one will have to keep in mind, has to be very precise with dates and happenings. Information given in the essay has to be accurate and a lot of detailed examination and research will have to go into the topic. So it is imperative for the writer to collect as much notes as possible. However one must also take care to see that the notes collected are relevant and pertaining to the theme. Irrelevant and illogical facts spoil the temperament of the paper and the writer will end up getting poor grades. A history paper will generally follow the mla essay format or will be written as in a Chicago style paper.

Given below are examples of how to write history on various topics:

The seven years war was the actual first world war – expand

The Seven Years War which lasted from 1756 till 1763 was in true sense the First World War as it involved conflicts between all the powerful European states of that time and also involved America and India. It involved major skirmishes between Prussia, Britain and small German states against a coalition of major powers consisting of Russia, Austria, Sweden, France and the Saxony. This war had its roots in the result of the previously fought War of Austrian Succession (1740-1748). Austria had never wanted to give up Silesia to Prussia and it was unhappy with the continuing colonial expansion of Britain and France. So in a true sense the Seven years War was a continuation of the Austrian War of Succession. Later Portugal (on the English side) and also Spain (on the French side) were drawn in to the war. Netherlands who had wanted to remain neutral had its force attacked in India…..

Impact of American Revolution on Europe

The American Revolution refers to the formation of the sovereign United States of America during the latter half of the 18th century. During this revolution the thirteen colonies of North America refused to be under the rule of the British Empire and monarchy and declared their independence. Many social changes were noticed and many republican ideals took shape at this time which resulted in democracy for the American people and also created the basics (liberty, equality, rights, anti corruption stance) that form the political values of America even today. The American Revolution was an eye opener for many countries under colonial or monarchical rule leading them to realize that they could also break away and form elected governments. This revolution….

Learn How to Cite a Paper

27  February, 2010

How to Cite a Paper – Guidelines

Knowing how to cite a paper is one of the most important aspects of essay writing. It is essential that a writer is aware of all the essay formats types that are used for writing. The most commonly used formatting patterns are the MLA, APA, Chicago and Harvard. While giving direct quotations it is imperative for the writer to cite correctly so as to avoid being charged for plagiarism.

Given below are examples of how to cite a paper correctly using various essay formats:

In case of MLA formatting, in-text citation will give the author’s name and page number. Without the available name of the author the title of the work cited can be used instead of the author’s name along with page number.

As for example:

According to Higginson “these qualities rendered him a proper object for the effective patriots…to bring forward to favour their views…..availed themselves of his great desire for popularity….represented him as a man useful in the cause of liberty…he was captivated…of being a publick man…was lavish of money…to gain their affections” (Higginson, p. 6-7)

The ‘works cited’ page for this would be:

Higginson, Stephen.Ten Chapters in the life of John Hancock. New York. Original from
University of California, 1857. Digitized on 11th October 2007. Print.

In case of net reference – site name. article heading or name. Date of publishing. Name of the affiliated university or organization. web. Date of when you visited the site.

In case of journal reference – Author. Name of the article. Name of the journal. Date of publishing. Pages referred. Print.

For APA formatting the in-text citation for a book would be:

According to Higginson (1857) “these qualities rendered him a proper object for the effective patriots…to bring forward to favour their views…..availed themselves of his great desire for popularity….represented him as a man useful in the cause of liberty…he was captivated…of being a publick man…was lavish of money…to gain their affections” (Higginson, 1857).

The ‘reference’ page would be:

Higginson, Stephen. (1857). Ten Chapters in the life of John Hancock. New York. Original from
University of California. Digitized on 11th October 2007. 6-7.

In case of journals – last name of author, initials of the first name of the author (year).
name of the article. Name of the journal. Volume number. Pages.

In case of net reference – last name of author, initials of the first name of the author (year).
Name of the article. Name of the Online journal. Retrieved on date from
Full link of the site.

The in-text citation for a Chicago paper would be will be like this:

According to Higginson “these qualities rendered him a proper object for the effective patriots…to bring forward to favour their views…..availed themselves of his great desire for popularity….represented him as a man useful in the cause of liberty…he was captivated…of being a publick man…was lavish of money…to gain their affections”. 1

The footnote for this would be

1. S. Higginson.Ten Chapters in the life of John Hancock. (New York. Original from
University of California, 1857), 6-7.

The ‘Notes page’, at the end of the essay but before the bibliography page, should read like this:

Stephen Higginson. Ten Chapters in the life of John Hancock. (New York. Original from
University of California, 1857), 6-7.

The last page that is the ‘Bibliography page’ that arranges the names of the cited authors alphabetically, should read like this:

Higginson, S. Ten Chapters in the life of John Hancock. New York. Original from
University of California, 1857. Digitized on 11th October 2007.

How to cite a paper may appear to be complicated at the first glance. However with lots of practice this would also become an easier job to do. 22  February, 2010

Biology Essay- Guidelines

A biology essay means writing about the various life processes seen all around us. The essay will explain in details about the flora and fauna, that are a part of the living world. It may involve writing about microscopic organisms to the largest living mammal, that is a whale. So a biology essay is wide in its scope. Depending on the topic this essay type may also vary. If one is writing a paper on stem cell research, this may fall under the controversial research topics and one will have to write accordingly. Similarly one may be assigned to write a cause and effect essay on the problem of environmental pollution.

Like any other essay a biology essay will also follow the five paragraph format, unless otherwise specified. It will have the introductory paragraph, 3 body paragraphs and a concluding paragraph. An essay on pediculosis or the common lice, will thus look like this:

Introduction

Pediculosis is the condition arising from infestation of the human body by the parasite commonly referred to as lice with the generic name of Pediculus. It is an ectoparasite that lives on the body of its host and survives by sucking blood from it. There are mainly three lice varieties found on the body of a human being. These are the head louse or scientifically known as Pediculus humanus, var. capitis, the body louse known as Pediculus humanus, var. corporis, and the pubic louse or…..

Body

The head louse or P. capitis and the body louse P. corporis are very similar in shape, with the head louse being slightly smaller in size. The P. pubis is very distinct is shape with claw like pincers like that of crabs. They suck blood many times in a day and reproduce very fast with a single female louse producing nearly up to ten eggs per day in its average life span of about 30 days. So if kept untreated…

The chief clinical symptoms of lice infection thus include itching, excoriation, louse nits, dermatitis and lesions formed due to lice bites and secondary infections of the affected areas. The body and hair louse can be seen in all age groups and is more common in females. Children, specially between the age group of 5- 11 years, in general are …

Clinical diagnoses as Langford and Thompson (2004) tell us are by “A physical examination revealing nits or lice. The examination may be enhanced using fluorescent light and microscopic examination of hair shafts”(Langford and Thompson, 2004). Treatments available for pediculosis…

Conclusion

Thus, pediculosis a very common infection, caused by the lice due to unhygienic living and physical conditions, is a very fast spreading one and often can be a source of embarrassment for the patient. It has to be dealt with sensitivity and extreme care by the concerned nurse who will also have the duty of spreading awareness…

Introduction: Here in this paragraph the writer introduces the reader to the story to be later critically analysed (Hedda Gabler by Henrik Ibsen).

Hedda Gabler is a play written by Henrik Ibsen and first published in 1890. It is the story of a lady named Hedda Gabler (nee Tesman). Her unmarried name was chosen as the title to show that she was more a father’s (aristocratic military personnel) girl than a wife to her husband Tesman (a rising academician). The drama unfolds as Hedda returns from her Honeymoon in pregnant condition and cannot control her jealousy on finding that her ex lover Lovborg has found a new …makes her realize the very futility of her own existence and she commits suicide by shooting herself with the remaining pistol.

Body- This paragraph will discuss the play in details and analyse it

At the first glance, Hedda seem to be in control of her situation. The rich daughter of an aristocratic family loves to control others and society in general. She expresses this in very clear words to Thea(Mrs. Elvstead) when she says “I want, for once in my life, to have power over a human being’s fate”(Ibsen, “Hedda Gabler”, p 324) There is an ever present sense of emptiness in her life which she tries to fill by trying to control other people’s fate. She does this without any sense of guilt…

Hedda tries to control and manipulate other people’s lives and fails miserably. She does not realise that desire and attainment are two entirely different things. The …

She is one way a victim of circumstances where everything she plans falls apart and lets her
sink further into despair and a sense of desolation. Hedda is more a victim of her own psychological complexities and falls prey to the unchanging realities that are inherited both genetically and personally. She lives in the realm of a …..

Conclusion - Will present a brief summary and reiterate the thesis statement.

Hedda commits suicide because she loses control of the situation, finds Judge Brack’s blackmailing unbearable and sees no way to escape her feeling of loneliness. Tesman at the end thrusts her aside as he sits to rewrite the lost manuscript throwing her deeper into a sense of despair. It is almost as if she realizes that life has no use for her and decides to escape…..

An Example of an APA Outline paper

11  February, 2010

Apa Outline as A Guideline

Writing an academic essay in the APA format means, writing the paper in the style developed and adopted by the American Psychological Association. This formatting is used mainly in scientific and technology related research papers. The basic difference in an APA paper with the other essay formats like the MLA / Harvard or the Chicago, lies in the pattern of in-text citation and referencing pattern. Given below is an example of an essay in an APA outline.

There should be a header in the paper which will give a short heading and the page number on the flush right hand side of the header. The essay should be entirely computer generated, unless otherwise specified, on a white paper of 8.5 inches x 11 inches and printed on only one side. There should be gap of one inch on all sides of the written essay and the format used is generally the Arial or the New Times Roman with a font size of 10-12.

The title should be aligned at the center of the page: Theories and Connection between Human Relations and Motivation

The essay should start after the title in the form of a new paragraph. The first line of the paragraph should be indented 5 spaces. For in-text citation, an APA outline essay should be formatted in the given manner:

Motivator-Hygiene theory which says that “the Intrinsic motivations (‘Motivators’) are the ones which give positive satisfaction whereas the Extrinsic Motivators are the ones which are ‘Hygiene’ factors i.e their absence leads to de-motivation (ACCEL team development, 2008).

Here note that APA format asks for the name of the writer and the date of publication to be written within parentheses. If date is not available then write n.d. in place of the date, as for example,

Jim Rohn (n.d.) once said “Humans have the remarkable ability to get exactly what they must have. But there …”.

For the reference page the formatting should be like this,

ACCEL Team Development. (2008). Human Relations Contributors. Retrieved on 12 February, 2009, from

http://accel-team.com/human_relations/hrels_05_herzberg.html

For no date available it should be,

Rohn, Jim.(n.d.). Motivation. Retrieved on 12 February, 2009, from

http://www.motivatingquotes.com/motivation.htm

For a book the reference should be,

Regester, M and Larkin, J. (2008). Risk Issues and Crisis Management in Public Relations.
London: Kogan Page Publishers.

For a journal the referencing should be,

Granstrom G, Jacobsson M, Tjellstrom A. (1992). Titanium implants in irradiated tissue: benefits from
hyperbaric oxygen. Int J Oral Maxillofac Implants. 7:15-25.

An apa outline paper will have all the basic things that one looks for in a good research paper. It should be well researched, well organised and well written, in a logical and comprehensive manner. All direct quotations should be correctly referenced according to the correct APA format. There are many essay samples written in the APA format that are readily available online. Check them out to getter a better understanding of the correct citation pattern followed by the APA school of formatting. If you place an order at MasterPapers.com the expert essay writers will make sure that you get a premium quality paper with any essay format that you ask for.
