20 November, 2008
An understanding of synthesis and writing your synthesis essay is going to take some time.
Synthesis is the implication of associating several summaries of main points. Synthesis in the business world involves breaking down all the major strains of positive thoughts in the form of a proposal. The information is arranged by topic rather than by source and it is organized in conjunction with accuracy and facts. Whenever a source is used, the reader can immediately decide whether or not they trust the source. The resources supplied are similar to the categorical sequence recognized as comparison and contrast found in comparative essays save and except synthesis is all about tying things together rather than noticeable similarities and differences. In a synthesis essay, your primary focus is to prove that you are familiar with the presented topic. Data and/or statistics derived from diagrams, figures, graphs, tables, illustrations, charts, maps and similar visual aids are the basis for synthesis informational writing prompts. Regardless of the sort of synthesis, the key functions remain unchanged and perform as follows:
- One: By summing up all the main points in a sequential order from its beginning to its end.
- Two: By organizing the thought pattern(s) in a way that it relates to the source of information easily understood by the reader and/or audience to which it is presented.
- Three: By breaking down the points and categorically compartmentalizing them.
- Four: By assisting the reader and/or audience to attain a choice with the use of several positive or negative deciding factors in sentence form.
- Five: By arranging data collected by topic primarily and secondarily by the source.
A synthesis essay functions similar to a persuasive one except it demands more on factual angles, let’s view it in a different perspective for a moment: in your personal everyday life you use synthesis to describe the main, key events that occurred in a book when explaining it to someone who has never read it before. When explaining it, you would associate all the information in a manner that is easily interpreted by the person you were addressing. You would do the same when describing events from a movie, a concert, a party, a recipe etc… If your construction of main points were all negative -like reasons why not to take the bus for example, then the person you were leveling with might choose not to take the bus based on your position or tips. If your amalgamation of ideas were all positive –like reasons to start a no-carb diet, then the person you were confiding to might decide to be an active participant in the same diet chosen by you.
When writing a synthesis essay, you may be required to present an abundance of sources to prove that you have researched the topic well and that you are capable of making a reasonable choice as well as concluding with a good thesis. Synthesis writing involves an in-dept amount of research; the chosen or assigned topic must be covered entirely in order to formulate a sound thesis. When writing your essay wherever a source is presented it must be correctly cited and credited. A clear purpose for your paper is to present the information both logically and in order of accuracy. The presented information must be processed in fractions by your target audience in order to have them decide ‘for or against’ you.
